Passage 1
Let us say there is something you don’t know how to do.
In the past of you were determined to learn, you might have called a friend or relative, taken a night class or walked down to the local library for a research term. But now a host of websites are springing up to provide free practical advice on these subjects and actually anything else you can think of.
In one sense, these “how-to” sites represent a part of the growing world of online learning. This tradition found one of its earliest forms in the FAQs—or Frequently Asked Questions files—that began on Usenet, the Internet’s global discussion group. These FAQs, many of which still circulate (go round continuously), took a specific subject—and explained it to complete novices.
But “how-to” sites take the FAQs idea in a somewhat different direction by addressing subjects that aren’t necessarily related to discussion forums (论坛). These sites take the style of a written tutorial (teaching period) and a tone of friendly advice. Possibly the biggest and best known of these sites is learn2. com (www. learn2. com). It offers nearly 1000 free tutorials and adds new ones frequently for a job interview.
At ehow. com (www. ehow. com) you can learn how to train for your first marathon, how to buy a vacation home, or how to make a movie in eight steps.

Passage 2
When John Milton, writer of “Paradise Lost”, entered Cambridge University, in 1625, he was already skilled in Latin after seven years of studying it as his second language at St. Paul’s School, London. Like all English boys who prepared for college in grammar schools, he had learned not only to read Latin but also to speak and write it smoothly and correctly. His pronunciation of Latin was English, however, and seemed to have sounded strange to his friends when he later visited Italy.
Schoolboys gained their skill in Latin in a bitter way. They kept in mind the grammar rules. They first made a word-for-word translation and then an idiomatic translation into English. As they increased their skill, they translated their English back into Latin without referring to the book and then compared their translation with the original. The schoolmaster was always at hand to encourage them. All schoolmasters believed Latin should be beaten in.
After several years of study, the boys began to write compositions in imitation of the Latin writers they read. And as they began to read Latin poems, they began to write poems in Latin. Because Milton was already a poet at ten, his poems were much better than those painfully put together by the other boys. During the seven years Milton spent at university, he made regular use of his command of Latin. He wrote some excellent Latin poems, which he published among his works in 1645.

Passage 3
Extinction has recently become a catchword. Every day entire species of plants and animals die out, and for the first time in history this is due to the actions of just one species: humans. We already know about five mass extinctions, and now a sixth seems to be under way. This one is different, because it is man-made. Deforestation of the rain forests is just one aspect of the phenomenon. Most people may have heard about that, but few people know that most of the species existing in the rain forests have never been described by science. Often they die out before we ever know they existed. Nobody can tell what treasures we lose, perhaps a cure for cancer or other modern-day diseases.
World-famous Harvard professor Edward O. Wilson examines life on our planet in his book The Diversity of Life. He doesn’t lecture his readers, but states in a matter-of-fact way what is known about the Earth’s past and the impact of mankind on its plant and animal life. Meanwhile, he suggests solutions for the present crisis.
If you are interested in the future of planet Earth and want to learn to see the bigger picture, this is the book for you. This is no light bedtime reading and will probably leave you feeling uneasy. However, it’s important for people living in the 21st century to think about how we can pass at least part of this diversity on to our children. Recent research shows that Earth needs about 10 million years to restore the lost diversity of species after a great crisis. Ten million years are not much in terms of the life of a planet, but the period is way too long for mankind. Wilson’s book should help us to start a process of reconsideration.
16. Judging from the context, what does the word “extinction” (Line 1,Para 1) mean?
A. Death of many plants and animals.
B. Killing of wild animals by man.
C. Deforestation of the rain forest.
D. Dying out of an entire species.
答案:
解析:从第一段可以推测出来。
17. In what sense is the present mass extinction different from the five previous ones?
A. It is larger in scale.
B. It is caused by man.
C. The lost diversity can never be restored.
D. It threatens the very existence of humans.
答案:
解析:从第一段第二句看出。
18. Why should people be concerned about extinction?
A. Because many existing species have not yet been studied.
B. Because the dying species may be of great value to humans.
C. Because it may lead to great climate changes on earth.
D. Because the dying species can cure cancer and other diseases.
答案:
解析:从文章中可以推测出来。
19. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.
A. there are now more species on our planet than before
B. every plant or animal is described in the book The Diversity of Life
C. without man’s interference every species would have survived
D. many species lived and died without ever being noticed by man
答案:
解析:从文章中可以推测出来。
20. What is the chief purpose of Edward O. Wilson in writing the book The Diversity of Life?
A. To provide readers with some interesting bedtime reading.
B. To help specialists do research on plant and animal life.
C. To arouse readers’ interest in the history of our planet.
D. To remind us of the urgency of preserving the diversity of life.
答案:
