Passage 1

When Mike and Jean Parker moved to Japan, everything was new and strange. They had been told by many people about the interesting opportunities in Japan. They were excited about living in a different culture. They had been well educated in the United States, and they wanted to earn good salaries at their jobs.

Mike was an engineer, and he had found a job with a Japanese electronics company. Jean had been a teacher, but later she had studied management and business procedures in the United States. She hoped to find a job with a Japanese company, and she was sure she could be successful.

At first, things were not easy. Mike and Jean didn't have any friends in Japan. No arrangements for an apartment had been made for them before they came. They had to find one quickly. They found a furnished apartment, but it was expensive. It was a pleasant place, but it wasn't very large.

Their neighbors, the Takadas, were very friendly. They spoke English very well, and they helped Mike and Jean improve their Japanese. Mrs. Takada helped Jean with her shopping. She also helped her understand Japanese customs.

Jean continued to look for work, but there were no jobs for her. She wasn't happy. She missed her family and friends in the United States. Mike urged her to be patient. He was sure she would find a good job soon. Then they would both be paid good salaries. One day Jean went for an interview with a large exporting company. Mr. Sobata, the owner of the company, needed someone to teach English to some of his employees. At first Jean was afraid she wouldn't be hired. However, Mr. Sobata liked Jean, and he was impressed by her understanding of Japanese customs and language. He gave her the job and told her that she could start the next day.

Soon Mike and Jean were both earning good salaries. They met many new friends. Some were Japanese and some were other Americans. They began to enjoy life in Japan.

Now they are living in a small house near Osaka.  It has been furnished with many nice things.   They often visit the Takadas, who are their closest friends. They are planning to go to the United States next year to visit their families. Life in a new country can be hard at first, but it can be very exciting.

Passage 2

Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say of accommodating a considerable proportion of its population in high blocks of flats. It is said that the Englishman objects to this type of existence, but if the case is such, he does in fact differ from the inhabitants of most countries of the world today. In the past our own blocks of fiats have been associated with the lower-income groups and they have lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom, and so on, as well as such details, important notwithstanding (然而), as easy facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish and storage places for baby carriages on the grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus individual houses will continue to rage in for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their case primarily on the assumption (设想) that everyone prefers an individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. The latter ignores the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered community and the cost in both money and time of the journeys to work for the suburban resident.

11. We can infer from the passage that ______.

  A. English people, like most people in other countries, dislike living in flats

  B. people in most countries of the world are not opposed to living in flats

  C. people in Britain are forced to move into high blocks of flats

  D. modem flats still fail to provide the necessary facilities for living

答案:

解析:从文章前2句可以推测出来。

12. What is said about the blocks of flats built in the past in Britain?

  A. They were mostly inhabited by people who did not earn much.

  B. They were usually not large enough to accommodate big families.

  C. They were sold to people before necessary facilities were installed.

  D. They provided playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings.

答案:

解析:第三句表明此意。

13. The word “rage” (Line 11) means “____”

  A. develop with great force

  B. encourage people greatly

  C. be ignored

  D. be in fashion

答案:

解析:从上下文可以推测出来。

14. Some people oppose the building of flats because _____.

  A. the living expenses for each individual family are higher

  B. it involves higher cost compared with the building of houses

  C. the disposal of rubbish remains a problem for those living in flats

  D. they believe people like to live in houses with gardens

答案:

解析:本文中间表明此意。

15. The author mentions that people who live in suburban houses _____.

  A. do not have access to easy facilities because they live away from the city

  B. have to spend more money and time traveling to work every day

  C. take longer time to know each other because they are a scattered community

  D. have to pay a lot of money to employ people to do service work

答案:

解析:本文最后一句表明此意。

Passage 3

To be sure, only children experience some things differently from those with siblings (兄弟姐妹). Many feel more pressure to succeed. In the absence of brothers and sisters, only children also tend to look more exclusively to their parents as role models.

In India, 19-year-old Saviraj Sankpal founded a support group for the tiny minority of only children. Among other things, the group does volunteer work to counter the myth that they are irresponsible. “People think we’re pampered (娇养) and spoiled,” says Sankpal, a computer engineering student. “But I’d like to remind them how lonely it can get.”

Most only children, however, say they wish for siblings only when it comes to caring for aging, unhealthy parents. Britain’s David Emerson, co-author of the book The Only Child, says that such a person bears terrible burden in having to make all the decisions alone. Emerson knows from experience: after his father died, he chose to move his elderly mother from their family home, where she was vulnerable (易受攻击的) to house breakers, to a new one with more security. “The move was quite hard on her, and she might feel that I pushed her into it,” he says, “Ultimately, I am left with that responsibility.”

In the future, more and more only children will likely face similar choices. With working mothers increasingly the norm (正常现象)many families are finding they simply don’t have the time, money or energy to have more than one child. As only children become common, perhaps the world will realize that the accusation made against them is unjust.

16. It can be inferred from the passage that the author’s attitude towards only children is _____________.

   C. let their only children make all the decisions alone

   D. set good examples to their only children

答案:

解析:第一段最后表明此意。

   A. is the only who cares about her

   B. doesn’t want to leave her alone
