此部分共有3篇短文,每篇短文后有5个问题。请从每个问题后的ABCD四个选项中选出正确选项。

Passage 1

Chess must be one of the oldest games in the world. An Arab traveler in India in the year 900 wrote that it was played ‘long, long ago’. Chess was probably invented in India, and it has been played everywhere from Japan to Europe since 1400. The name ‘chess’ is interesting. When one player is attacking the other’s king, he says, in English, ‘check’. When the king has been caught and cannot move anywhere, he says ‘check mate’. These words come from Persian. ‘Shah mat’ means ‘the king is dead’. That is when the game is over, and one player has won.

Such an old game changes very slowly. The rules have not always been the same as they are now. For example, at one time the queen could only move one square at a time. Now she is the strongest piece on the board. It would be interesting to know why this has happened! Chess takes time and thought, but it is a game for all kinds of people. You don’t have to be a champion in order to enjoy it. It is not always played by two people sitting at the same table. The first time the Americans beat the Russians was in a match played by radio. Some of the chess masters are able to play many people at the same time. The record was when one man played 400 games! It is said that some people play chess by post. This must make chess the slowest game in the world.

Passage 2

A well-made film offers a whole world of things to watch. First there are the story aspects—the plot, characters, dialogue and themes. Then there are the technical aspects—the camera work, cutting and special effects. And there are many other things, like the credits and musical score and the acting. A well-made film offers much more than you see in one viewing.

Films are a means of communication. They can tell you things, just as newspapers do, or television, or any other means of communication. Sometimes they communicate important things to you, like ideas or lifestyles or ways of looking at the world. Sometimes people are aware of this, and sometimes not. The more aware you are, the better.

Notice, for example, the way films sometimes affect fashion. A star dresses or wears her hair in a certain way, and suddenly everyone is imitating her. Boys in the 1950s could sometimes be seen wearing black leather jackets, lounging on street corners and smoking cigarettes. They were imitating Marlon Brando. His films taught them a certain way to behave.

Films can also teach politics. In Star Wars, the heroes were a bunch of lovable incompetents fighting with guts and not much else. They were, in fact, rather like the British in the early days of WWII. Their enemies, like the Nazis, had a big advantage in equipment and numbers of troops, and they were like the Nazis in discipline and heartlessness too. The whole film, in fact, was a re-run of WWIIand taught values like faith and love of liberty. This is all to the good, but the point is, did you notice it?

11. All of the following are mentioned as noticeable aspects of a film EXCEPT____.

   A. list of names of actors and directors

   B. the cost of a film

   C. the music for a film

   D. language used in a film

答案:

解析:唯有该答案没有提及。

12. The last sentence in paragraph 1 probably means ____.

   A. a high quality film can be appreciated repeatedly from different angles

   B. a good film always attracts a lot of viewers

   C. a well-made film usually has more than one theme

   D. one can never find out how many characters in a good film

答案:

解析:与第一段最后一句话意思完全吻合。

13. According to the passage, films can affect all the things below EXCEPT____.

   A. fashions     B. lifestyles    C. politics     D. truths

14. It can be inferred from the passage that in his film, Marion Brando was____.

   A. a motorist who always wore a black leather jacket

   B. a homeless man who died of excessive smoking

   C. a rebellious young man during the WWII

   D. an idler who didn’t have any serious things to do

Passage 3

Cindy Hess began her automotive career as a Design and Development Engineer with Chrysler, in the fall of 1977. Today, she is Vice-President of Daimler Chrysler, and head of the Small Car platform Engineering Department which is directly responsible for the design and development of the Neon, Doge Viper, and all future small cars.

Many different departments are involved in bringing a product to market, said Hess, referring to the 2000 Neon. A company looks into renewing a particular vehicle when its marketplace demand is good, and the profits increase our shareholders value, explained Hess. We look to our market research in determining which options well keep the same or delete, and which ones we want to add to improve our appeal.

Now that the Neon 2000 is on the market, her team will use survey and research results to determine which option packages work best for the consumer, and what improvements, if any, need to be made. And the beat goes on.

Hess supervises 1200 engineers while managing a successful life as wife and mother. Her secret, she said, is to always try to give 150 percent in everything I do. The only way I can really balance my work and family is by cheating at both ends. For example, Hess said, I always take my boys to school on the first day of the year--so I come in a little late. A few times a year I leave work for a couple of hours to see my son in a play or to attend his swim meet.

Like most other successful women in the auto industry, Hesss day begins early and ends late. In her case, coaching her sons basketball game ends some of Hesss days. Occasionally. she adds, I come in to work on the weekends to catch up on paperwork and mail and have also been known to be called to work while I am on vacation.
